OGN AR Viewer: privacy policy

OGN AR Viewer is a privacy-friendly augmented reality client to the OGN (Open Glider Network).

Note that this application is not affiliated with the OGN. To learn more about the OGN, please visit www.glidernet.org.

Camera access

OGN AR Viewer requires access to your camera to show a live preview on the screen. It does not record, store, transfer or does anything else with it.

Fine location access (GNSS)

OGN AR Viewer requires access to your fine location to calculate where the aircraft are relative to you.

To fetch data from the OGN, the application needs to send your location. Unfortunately, the OGN doesn't support encryption, for this reason this has to be done in clear text.

To protect your privacy, the location accuracy is reduced before leaving your device. This works by snapping your location to a point grid, where the distance between points is about 5 km:

Note that OGN AR Viewer still requests you for a fine location, it cannot work with a coarse location.

Internet access

OGN AR Viewer requests data over the Internet. When connecting to the OGN, the identifier (call sign) "NOCALL" is always used. The connection string also includes the app version and your obfuscated location (see above). Your IP address is seen to the OGN servers, that's how the Internet works.

Note that Android provides this permission automatically, so you won't see a permission request for it.

Aircraft directory

You can store additional information, such as the aircraft registration number, its owner and base airfield, in the aircraft directory. This directory is stored locally on your device. If you want, you can export it and transfer the file to a friend, who can import this file on their device.
